KUALA LUMPUR – National track cyclist Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom missed his chance for bronze in the men’s individual sprint at the UCI Track Nations Cup in Milton, Canada yesterday.
Shah Firdaus could not match the speed of last year’s Commonwealth Games champion Matthew Richardson of Australia, who defeated him 2-0 in the bronze-medal race at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Nicholas Paul won the event with a 2-0 victory over Poland’s Mateusz Rudyk.
Meanwhile, national rider Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri broke the national record with a time of 11.057sec in the qualifying round of the women’s individual sprint.
Her time smashed the record of 11.094sec set by teammate Anis Amira Rosdi in Nilai, Negri Sembilan last year.
Nurul Izzah cleared the qualifying round but failed to advance further when she lost in the round of 16 to Mexico’s Yuli Verdugo Osuna.
Anis Amira was also shown the exit in the same round by Lowri Thomas of Great Britain.
Last Friday, Nurul Izzah, Anis Amira, and Nurul Aliana Syafika Azizan clocked 50.172sec in the women’s team sprint to erase their own national record of 50.388sec, which was set in Jakarta last February. – Bernama, April 24, 2023
