KUALA LUMPUR – The Covid-19 pandemic may have limited our travels, especially during the school holidays, but chess pieces will continue to move across the board(er).
14 young individuals will be moving through Asia as they start their first rounds in the Asian Zone of the FIDE Online World Cadets & Youth Rapid Chess Championships today.
The championship held by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) consists of 1,380 participants from 114 different countries and is held continentally to accommodate the different time zones of the participants.
12 of the best players of each continental stage will then advance to the final, where they will be joined by four players directly seeded in ten knock-out tournaments.
The 14 Malaysian representatives qualified through the Malaysian Chess Federation’s (MCF) National Rapid event in October, events organized by the ASIAN Chess Federation, and a few gained automatic qualifications from the ASIAN Chess Federation.
Malaysia has representatives in all five age groups – U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 – both in the open and the girls' sections.
Among the 14 candidates, we have two FIDE Masters (FM) in the Under 16 Open Section, a Woman Candidate Masters (WCM) in the Under 16 girls sections and Under 18 girls section each, as well as a Candidate Master (CM) in the Under 18 open section.
These young minds will play through Sunday in the comforts of their home, hoping to move forward and represent Malaysia against other countries and continents. – The Vibes, December 11, 2020
