A CARGO plane skidded off the runway into the sea while landing at Hong Kong International Airport, the city’s airport operator said on Monday, with two people reportedly confirmed dead.
The flight, arriving from Dubai, was landing at the airport around 3.50am (6.50am AEST), according to Hong Kong's airport authority.
The northern runway at the airport was closed after the incident, Hong Kong International Airport said, adding the south and central runways would continue to operate.
Two airport ground staff fell into the sea, a statement from the Civil Aviation department says. They were rescued but later died in hospital, according to local media including public broadcaster RTHK citing police.
Four crew members onboard the plane survived and were taken to hospital.
Hong Kong's Government Flying Service has deployed helicopters above the affected runway, while Fire Services Department vessels also took part in the rescue, media reports say. - October 20, 2025
