THAILAND has accused Cambodia of breaching a recently agreed ceasefire after Cambodian forces allegedly fired mortar rounds into the country’s Ubon Ratchathani province on January 6, injuring one Thai soldier.
In a statement, the Thai army said the attack occurred in the morning and added that the wounded soldier was being evacuated for urgent medical treatment.
“Cambodia has violated the ceasefire,” AFP cited the statement saying, marking the first reported incident since both countries agreed to a truce on December 27.
The ceasefire had ended three weeks of intense fighting that erupted from a decades-old territorial dispute along the Thailand-Cambodia border. Military clashes throughout 2025, including deadly confrontations in December, left dozens dead and displaced approximately one million people on both sides.
Cambodia has not yet issued a response to the allegation. The incident raises renewed concerns about the fragility of the truce and the potential for further escalation in the region.
Analysts warn that continued violations along the border could destabilise communities already affected by last year’s conflict and complicate diplomatic efforts aimed at securing lasting peace between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.
