KIM Jong Un has been reappointed as president of state affairs, according to state media KCNA, following a session of the country’s Supreme People's Assembly convened in Pyongyang.
The session, held a day earlier, is part of the regular political calendar in the isolated state, where the legislature functions largely to endorse decisions already taken by the ruling Workers’ Party.
Reuters reported today that the assembly is expected to deliberate on amendments and additions to the country’s socialist constitution, as well as the election of key leadership positions, including the chairman of the State Affairs Commission and other governing bodies.
It also serves as a formal mechanism to translate party directives into state law, typically convening after major party congresses. In this instance, the meeting follows the ninth Workers’ Party Congress held in February, during which a new five-year economic plan was announced.
According to KCNA, lawmakers will review the implementation of that economic strategy alongside broader governance matters.
International attention has focused on whether the constitution may be revised to further entrench Kim’s policy shift towards a more confrontational stance on inter-Korean relations.
In recent years, Kim has moved away from the long-standing objective of peaceful reunification, instead framing South Korea as a hostile state under what has been described as a “two hostile states” policy.
The developments underscore the continued centralisation of power around Kim’s leadership, as well as the formal role of the Supreme People’s Assembly in endorsing and codifying decisions made within the ruling party structure. - March 23, 2026
