A SUCCESSION of earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 3.1 to 4.5 shook the Tahuna area in the Sangihe Islands of North Sulawesi on Saturday night.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the latest tremor was recorded at 11.32 pm local time with a magnitude of 3.1, Indonesia’s national news agency ANTARA reported.
The epicentre of this specific quake was located approximately 202 kilometres northwest of Tahuna at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.
BMKG confirmed that the seismic activity did not possess the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Prior to that event, a stronger earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale was reported at 10.45 pm in the same vicinity.
That particular tremor was centred about 188 kilometres northwest of Tahuna, also at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Within the same period, two additional tremors were recorded by seismologists.
A magnitude 3.1 quake occurred at 10.30 pm at a depth of 10 kilometres, preceded by a magnitude 3.2 shock at 10.02 pm at a deeper level of 42 kilometres.
BMKG reiterated that none of the recorded earthquakes had the potential to cause a tsunami, and there have been no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries resulting from the incidents.
The authorities continue to closely monitor seismic activity in the region and have advised local residents to remain calm while relying solely on official sources for updates. - June 14, 2026
