FIFTEEN Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat carrying holidaymakers capsized off southern Vietnam on Saturday, less than half a kilometre from shore, in a tragedy that has prompted investigations into maritime safety standards.
The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned shortly after departing Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, near Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, according to local authorities.
Witness Ashish Kumar, who was at the scene, said passengers cried for help as the vessel suddenly overturned.
"The boat had not even gone half a kilometre when it just tipped over. We screamed, 'Help! Help!'" he told The Associated Press.
He said nearby boats immediately rushed to assist, but many passengers could not be saved.
"By then it was too late," he said.
Authorities said 21 people were rescued while all 15 deceased victims were recovered. Several injured passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Footage broadcast by Vietnamese media showed rough seas and strong winds during the rescue operation, with emergency teams using life buoys and jet skis to bring survivors back to shore. Some passengers were reportedly trapped inside the overturned vessel.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered an investigation into the accident and directed authorities to hold those responsible accountable, while calling for a review of waterway and maritime safety measures in the area.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the deaths and said the Indian Embassy was providing assistance to those affected and their families.
Indian electronics manufacturer Lava International confirmed that some of its employees and business partners were among those involved in the accident.
"Our immediate priority is to extend all possible support to those affected and their families," the company said.
Many of the victims were believed to be from India's southern states of Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Authorities in both states have established assistance channels to coordinate support for families and facilitate the return of victims' remains.
The tragedy occurred near Phu Quoc, a popular tourist destination in the Gulf of Thailand known for its beaches and clear waters.
