AT least 73 people were injured in a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes targeting civilian and economic sites in four cities, as the Saudi-led coalition vowed a firm response to the latest escalation.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said the attacks targeted sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, describing the escalation as dangerous and a direct threat to Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and civilian population.
The casualties included women and children, according to the coalition.
“The coalition will take all necessary operational measures to deter this terrorist militia and resolutely confront its hostile approach,” Reuters cited al-Maliki saying in a statement on X.
The attacks mark a significant escalation in hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen and the country’s most populous areas.
The Houthis have intensified attacks towards Saudi Arabia since declaring a naval blockade against Riyadh in July, with strikes also targeting vessels in the Red Sea.
The latest attacks came amid renewed fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces, further threatening a fragile regional security environment.
The coalition said the Houthis had deliberately targeted civilian and economic infrastructure, while vowing to take measures to neutralise the sources of the threat.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that Saudi Aramco’s oil facilities in Jazan were hit in a fresh strike, with the extent of any damage being assessed.
The report has not been independently verified, and Aramco has not commented.
The renewed attacks raise further concerns over the security of Saudi Arabia’s civilian and economic infrastructure, as fighting in Yemen intensifies and the conflict increasingly threatens regional stability and key maritime routes.
The latest escalation also comes after the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out an air strike on a prison in Yemen’s northern Jawf province, killing seven people, including a child. Saudi Arabia has not commented on the allegation.
A truce that had significantly reduced fighting between the warring sides since 2022 has come under renewed strain as clashes and cross-border attacks intensify. - September 8, 2026
