KING Charles III of Britain will bring together leaders of some of the world’s biggest artificial intelligence companies this week to discuss whether shared principles are needed to guide a technology that has triggered growing warnings about its potential threat to humanity.
Executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, along with Britain’s minister for AI, are expected to join the meeting to discuss how AI can be harnessed to benefit society while upholding human dignity.
Buckingham Palace said the gathering would explore how AI could be used in ways that benefit society and contribute “to the flourishing of both people and the planet”.
Reuters reported on Monday that the meeting comes as calls grow for the industry to slow the development of increasingly powerful AI models.
Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei said on Saturday that AI companies must slow the pace of model development, while two researchers at the San Francisco-based company have warned that rapidly advancing AI could eventually pose an existential threat to humanity.
Anthropic last week also published a threat intelligence report detailing how several actors had used its Claude AI models for activities ranging from weapons development and cyber operations to surveillance and fraud.
But efforts to forge a common global position face significant obstacles.
US President Donald Trump rejected calls for a slowdown in AI development on Sunday, while China’s state-backed Global Times described Amodei’s proposal as a “Cold War playbook” aimed at Beijing.
Charles has previously used his position, including as Prince of Wales, to bring together business and political leaders to discuss major global issues, particularly environmental concerns.
Britain, which has emerged as a leading European centre for AI funding and startups, has favoured a relatively light-touch approach to regulation, putting it closer to the United States than the European Union.
The UK AI Security Institute, established after the 2023 AI Safety Summit, has voluntary agreements with major AI companies that give it pre-deployment access to their models to assess their capabilities and potential risks, providing officials with a window into frontier AI development. - September 14, 2026
