TWELVE people were injured in a shooting near Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (Florida A&M) on Saturday night, with police investigating a physical altercation that preceded the gunfire.

The shooting occurred on Perry Street in Tallahassee near the university campus, according to the university. Tallahassee police said the injured comprised six adults and six juveniles.

"At least three of the shooting victims have sustained serious injuries, while nine others are reported to be in stable condition," police said in a statement.

Police Chief Lawrence Revell said it was particularly distressing that children were among those injured. The youngest victim was 11, the New York Post reported.

The newspaper reported that an altercation at a homecoming party escalated into gunfire shortly before 8pm, with a fight involving two or three individuals leading to shots being fired. Police have not publicly detailed the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

The shooting occurred during Florida A&M's homecoming weekend. The university, a public historically Black university established in 1887, is based in Tallahassee, the state capital of Florida.

Police said their violent crimes unit was investigating the incident. The motive and whether the shooting was directly connected to university homecoming activities had not been established.

"The safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority," Florida A&M said in a statement posted on X. - October 25, 2026
