SEOUL – South Korea’s Covid-19 cases broke the daily record for the third straight day due to a resurgence in the metropolitan area here, said the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency today.
The Xinhua news agency reported that the country logged another 1,378 infections, raising its total to 166,722.
It is slightly higher than the previous day’s 1,316.
Infections have hovered above 1,200 for four consecutive days, while the average daily caseload in the past week stands at 1,054.
The spike has been attributed to small clusters in the capital and its surrounding Gyeonggi province, as well as imported cases.
Of the new cases, 501 comprised Seoul residents and 441 were recorded in Gyeonggi.
Fifty-eight cases were imported.
Another two deaths were confirmed, pushing up fatalities to 2,038.
South Korea has tested over 10.88 million people, of whom 10,545,199 yielded negative results.
Since the nation’s vaccination drive kicked off on February 26, 15,573,316 people have received the jab, with 5,801,997 fully immunised. – Bernama, July 10, 2021
