GUANGZHOU – More than 33,000 residents have been evacuated as of yesterday evening, as Typhoon Lupit made landfall this morning in the coastal areas of Guangdong, China.
The typhoon – the ninth one this year – landed at about 11.20am in the coastal waters off Nan’ao in Shantou, packing winds of up to 24 m/s at its centre, according to Guangdong’s meteorological observatory, reported Xinhua.
The province has also shut down 43 seaside scenic spots and bathing beaches, said the provincial Emergency Management Department.
More than 3,500 fishing boats have returned to ports and 6,200 people – engaged in mariculture in offshore waters – have gone ashore to avoid danger.
Gales and rainfall brought by the typhoon will continue in the next three days. Heavy rain is expected to lash most of Guangdong, the south-eastern part of Zhejiang, eastern part of Fujian, and south-eastern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. – Bernama, August 5, 2021
