WASHINGTON – The United States (US) ambassador to the United Nations (UN) condemned the alleged conspiracy to assassinate Myanmar’s UN envoy Kyaw Moe Tun, who has been pressured to resign by the military junta.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield in a statement said: “We unequivocally condemn this threat to Kyaw Moe Tun, which fits a disturbing pattern of authoritarian leaders and their supporters reaching across the globe – including into the US – to persecute and repress activists, journalists and others who dare speak or stand against them.”

She also expressed her solidarity with the envoy, who “continues to demonstrate remarkable courage and bravery in speaking on behalf of the people of Burma (Mynamar) who demand a return to democracy”, reported Sputnik.

US authorities arrested two Myanmar citizens – Phyo Hein Htut and Ye Hein Zaw – in New York on Friday, for allegedly plotting to kill Kyaw Moe Tun.

Phyo Hein Htut, 28, was in contact with an arms dealer in Thailand linked to the military in Myanmar, and the two discussed plans to hire people to seriously injure the ambassador to force him to resign, or to kill him if he refused, said the Justice Department. – Bernama, August 8, 2021
