MALAYSIA has taken a decisive step forward in cementing its leadership in the regional electric vehicle (EV) industry with the launch of INV New Material Technology Sdn. Bhd.’s lithium-ion battery separator facility – the first commercial operation of its kind in the nation and the largest in Southeast Asia.

Officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, the RM3.2 billion investment is regarded as a strategic breakthrough in enhancing Malaysia’s EV supply chain, while also accelerating industrial transformation under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.

The high-tech plant will produce up to 1.3 billion square metres of wet-processed and coated lithium-ion separators each year – a vital component in EV battery production. The facility is also expected to generate over 2,000 jobs, including more than 550 high-skilled technical positions with starting salaries exceeding RM3,000 per month.

Crucially, the project also represents a commitment to long-term capacity building. Malaysian workers will benefit from structured training, access to cutting-edge equipment, and collaboration with international experts in engineering plastics and advanced materials – fostering a skilled talent pool for the country’s high-value sectors.

“The launch of INV New Material Technology’s facility marks a transformative step in Malaysia’s electric vehicle journey,” said Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) in a statement.

“Anchored in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the Chemical Industry Roadmap 2030, this investment bridges a critical gap in our EV ecosystem and embeds advanced materials into our supply chain.

“It sets a new standard for high-tech manufacturing, while strategically catalysing broader industrial growth, and attracting more global and local players to strengthen Malaysia’s position in the global EV value chain.”

Chief Executive Officer of INV New Material Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd., Liu Rui, described the launch as more than just a commercial milestone. “This facility is not just an investment in infrastructure, but a long-term commitment to sustainability, innovation, and talent development. Malaysia offers the strategic advantages, talent pool, and government support we need to make this vision a reality, and we are proud to call it home to our first facility in the ASEAN region,” he said.

The Penang plant also exemplifies best practices in Industry 4.0, incorporating smart manufacturing systems, automation, and digital technologies to ensure optimal precision, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

As Malaysia moves to consolidate its place within the global EV supply chain, this landmark facility signals its readiness to lead in next-generation technology, advanced materials, and sustainable industrial development – all crucial pillars in the nation’s future economic strategy. - June 30, 2025
