PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will discuss a proposal for Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to examine the possibility of oil exploration in the Maldives.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said he was confident in Petronas’ capabilities and extensive experience in the global oil and gas industry.
“Regarding the proposal for Petronas to examine the possibility of oil exploration in the Maldives, I need to discuss this matter with Petronas.
“I am confident in Petronas’ strength today across the world, from Canada to Turkmenistan, Sudan, Suriname, Peru and Brazil. I believe it would not be a major problem to expand its reach closer to here, namely the Maldives,” he said.
Anwar was speaking at a joint press conference with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office in Malé today. - September 14, 2026
