KOTA KINABALU – Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will take legal action against Syarikat Pembinaan Azam Jaya Sdn Bhd over power cuts caused by the construction firm’s earthworks.

In a statement today, SESB assets senior manager Idris Mohd Noor said the constant supply disruptions have resulted in huge losses to the state utility company.

“SESB expresses its disappointment with Azam Jaya for causing power disruptions arising from earthworks initiated by them.

“Azam Jaya’s negligence and mistakes have inconvenienced our consumers, as well as proved costly to SESB and damaged our reputation as a utility provider.”

The last straw came on July 1, when the earthworks resulted in damage to an underground cable along Jalan UMS here.

The incident triggered a blackout affecting over 1,000 SESB customers in Menggatal and Telipok.

“Despite remedial works done by the company and Public Works Department, similar incidents continue to occur,” said Idris.

“SESB is in the process of finalising a suit against the company.”

The legal action will see the utility firm citing a total of 78 instances of earthworks carried out by Azam Jaya that damaged power cables.
