KUALA LUMPUR – Bursa Malaysia opened higher today following better Wall Street performance overnight.

At 9.15am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI rose 4.13 points, or 0.27%, to 1,533.15 from yesterday’s close of 1,529.02.

It opened 3.31 points higher at 1,532.33.

Market breadth was positive, with gainers outpacing losers 334 to 159, while 310 counters were unchanged, 1,499 untraded and five suspended.

The ringgit, meanwhile, declined further against the United States dollar at the opening bell, following the US Federal Reserve’s upbeat conclusion of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting yesterday that could lead to an eventual hike in its policy rate.

At 9am, the local note depreciated to 4.1925/1955 from 4.1910/1950 at the close yesterday.

Bank Islam chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the FOMC meet concluded with the Fed explicitly stating its intention to taper down its asset purchase programme soon. – Bernama, September 23, 2021
