KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah government is welcoming Sinyi Realty Group’s plans to build a five-star resort on Mengalum Island, some 58km northwest of here, after the Taiwanese company acquired half of the island.
Sinyi Realty announced in late September 2019 that it had bought more than 1.98 sq km of the island for US$31.6 million (RM131.4 million).
In welcoming the investment, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Md Noor said the company plans to build an “ultra-luxury, five-star eco-tourism resort” costing more than RM1 billion on the island.
He said tourism is one of the state’s main thrusts in its Sabah Maju Jaya five-year plan, and is crucial to development in the state.
“Sabah is one of the most beautiful states in Malaysia and we have so much to offer in terms of investments in the tourism sector,” said Hajiji in welcoming a delegation from Sinyi Realty Group at his office in Menara Kinabalu today.
The delegation was led by Sinyi Group chairman Chou Chun Chi, vice-chairman Chow Wan Mei Wen, general-manager Chow Kok Yein, senior manager Tan Chung Yong and project manager Chou Chun Hao.
Also present was Sabah Assistant Tourism, Environment and Culture Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman.
Hajiji also assured the company that the state government will facilitate and hand out assistance in their investments.
The project planned by Sinyi Realty is also set to generate 2,400 jobs and aims to woo 97,000 tourists to Sabah annually, said Chou. – The Vibes, October 13, 2021
