MIRI – Job opportunities are blooming again after a two-year lull, with private sectors in northern Sarawak and other places opening their doors to new workers.
Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said at least 1,588 work positions are up for grabs in a job and education roadshow organised by his office at Miri Meritz Hotel here this weekend.
"We are seeing companies in Miri and Bintulu and other places, including in Peninsular Malaysia, offering new jobs again,” said Ting, who is also state deputy tourism, culture, and performing arts minister.
“They are seeking workers for their various sectors. This Saturday and Sunday, at least 1,588 jobs are up on offer at the jobs and education event here.
“This is a golden opportunity for those seeking jobs to secure one now,” he told reporters at his office.
Ting said there will be about 90 educational bodies and 20 companies taking part in the event.
For those interested in venturing into the entrepreneurial sector, the Sarawak Foundation will be giving talks and offering the training courses, he said.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan had also recently said that small and medium-scale business players are reviving themselves throughout the vast state during the Covid-19 endemic stage.
Small-scale enterprises and B40 traders and hawkers have today taken up 98% of the total population of entrepreneurs in this state, he told a business seminar in Samarahan town recently.
Tengah said SMEs have taken up pivotal roles in reviving the economy of the state and country in this post-pandemic period.
“The Sarawak government has allocated RM77 million to provide subsidies to SMEs since the reopening of the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Their role in state and national economic recovery cannot be ignored as they make up up to 98% of the business population,” he said.
Recently, a state assemblyman had also urged Sarawak school-leavers to seriously look at pursuing technical and entrepreneurial skills, not just focus on academic based courses for their further education.
Lawmakers in Sarawak have been stressing the need for more Sarawakians to be trained in fields linked to technical and entrepreneurial skills.
The federal government is providing RM50 million to train young entrepreneurs this year, and young Sarawakian business minds have been told not to miss out.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau had said school-leavers must be guided towards a more balanced outlook in their career choices.
“School-leavers who have taken their SPM and STPM must give equal consideration towards courses of technical and entrepreneurial expertise too.
“Sarawak is opening up more opportunities in these sectors throughout the state,” he said.
Sarawak Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah recently said the young entrepreneurs’ development fund from Putrajaya is a grant that does not require repayment.
“The federal government is channelling this fund through Bank Rakyat as grants for young entrepreneurs registered with the ministries.
“The fund is relatively easy to apply for, and approval is quite prompt with the amount of funds to be allocated depending on the type and size of the business,” he said. – The Vibes, July 28, 2022
