KUALA LUMPUR – Heineken Malaysia Bhd has been recognised as Company of the Year for Environmental Sustainability & Social Initiatives, and the Long-Standing Excellence in Sustainability Award at the Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards 2022.
The company’s managing director Roland Bala said the double recognition is a nod to Heineken Malaysia’s “commitment to creating a positive impact” in the country.
“As a responsible and progressive brewer, our global Brew a Better World sustainability strategy ensures we do the right things to protect the environment, grow with our people and communities around us, as well as advocate responsible consumption. We will continue to be guided by our purpose to ‘brew the joy of true togetherness to inspire a better world’,” he said in a statement yesterday.
As of June, the brewer reduced its carbon emissions in production by 19%, compared with its 2018 baseline, while expecting to reduce 86% of carbon emissions in production by 2025, and net-zero carbon emissions in production by 2030 as well as across its value chain by 2040.
Its corporate affairs and legal director Renuka Indrarajah said Heineken Malaysia has a roadmap to decarbonise its operations, including investing in renewable electricity, increasing biogas recovery, and exploring new innovations to reach its net-zero goal.
She added that the company is the first to fully balance the water it uses in its products.

Since March, Heineken Malaysia has transitioned to renewable electricity via the Malaysian Renewable Electricity Certificate programme, and on-site renewable electricity generation (solar photovoltaic) installation is underway, targeted for completion early next year.
The brewer has also achieved zero waste to landfill by recycling and upcycling 100% of its by-products and production waste since 2017.
It is also active in corporate social responsibility programmes, such as working with eight civil society groups to deliver 150,000 meals to vulnerable communities during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Other initiatives included some 100,000 meals and emergency care packages to flood victims in Klang Valley after the December disaster. – The Vibes, August 19, 2022
