INSPIRED by the struggles of the past towards the nation's independence, Penang-based sculptor Rahimi Bujang began moulding pieces to reflect the challenges of generations before him in their fight.
As the country marked its 68th Merdeka Day last Sunday, Rahimi unveiled his latest solo exhibition - "Tanah Airku: Retak Di Bawah Mahkota" at O Sculpture Art Space, Hin Bus Depot in Penang with friends and well-wishers.
Former Finance Minister, the late Tun Daim Zainuddin's widow Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid launched the event.
She is a great supporter of the world of arts and culture in Penang.
Penang State Art Gallery chairman and Penang Art District advisor Lee Khai said that Rahmi’s work carries both visual impact and a deeper message.
“Rahmi’s sculptures confront us with difficult truths. They may look playful at first, but behind their forms lie unease, fractures and the ache beneath their crowns.”
Lee said the exhibition reflects the contradictions of Malaysia, describing it as “the splendour of a nation that shines on the surface, but bears deep cracks within.”
He added that it was significant for the exhibition to open on National Day.
“Independence is not a static prize — it is a responsibility renewed with every generation,” he said.
“Retak Di Bawah Mahkota reminds us of that love for the homeland also means the courage to confront its fractures, and the will to mend them.”
The exhibition is dedicated to Daim, who despite his controversial life, was an avid supporter of the arts scene, something which his widow has also championed.
Lee said Daim’s support for the arts remains influential, calling the struggle as “a challenge to us all to make a positive impact in our communities.”
Lee, a collector of Rahmi’s works, noted the artist’s steady rise in the local art scene.
He recalled Rahmi’s participation in the Penang Art Open competitions, where he won smaller prizes before clinching the overall award in 2024.
The victory entitled him to a solo exhibition at the state gallery.
He also highlighted Rahmi’s 2021 installation Kerusi, shown at the National Art Gallery’s Bakat Muda Sezaman competition and later exhibited in Penang, which he acquired for his collection.
“Art is not always comfortable, but it is always necessary,” Lee said.
“In the spirit of Merdeka, let these works confront us and awaken in us the courage to build a nation worthy of its crown.”
Meanwhile, Nai'mah said art can shape young minds and nurture critical thinking, which she believes is essential to freedom.
"While governments and institutions may attempt to silence or control people, art opens the door to new ways of thinking. The freedom of expression cannot be suppressed and that the power of ideas will always endure."
The exhibition at Hin Bus Depot ends on September 28,
The gallery opens Fridays to Sundays, from 10am to 6pm and admission is free. - September 2, 2025.
