THERE'S just something about romance in period dramas that charms an audience and keeps them hooked onto the story.

Sure, one may feel exasperated when the couple they are rooting for is taking the longer, more conservative route to happily ever after, but there’s no denying that the pursuit of romance in period dramas is often full of meaning and sincerity.

From sweet words of encouragement to intense yet gentle gazes, these period dramas have some tips for romance that you might find useful in your love life!

1. Your eyes speak volumes

If you want to know if someone is genuinely interested in you, try to pay attention to the look in their eyes. The longer and gentler the gaze, especially when they think you’re not looking, there’s a high chance that they really, really, really like you.

Just look at how the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) looks at Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) in 'Bridgerton' (pictured); the chemistry is just electrifying whenever these two exchange glances! And let’s be real, the Duke’s intense gaze is probably the reason why he’s one of the most popular characters from the show.

Pro-tip: Even if it sounds cliché, make it a habit to maintain meaningful eye contact with your intended. Your special attention can make them feel they’re the only person you have eyes for in a room full of people.

2. Foster an emotional connection

Romance in period dramas usually focus more on emotional attachments, such as in Korean drama 'Mr. Sunshine', which proves that love doesn’t always have to be conveyed through words or actions.

The series, which garnered nine nominations at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, did not have as many intimate scenes compared to other Korean dramas, but viewers were still touched by the love and sincerity between Captain Eugene Choi (Lee Byung-hun) and Ko Ae-shin (Kim Tae-ri).

Pro-tip: Try to foster an emotional attachment by learning to listen, accept, and support your partner so that you’re always the first person on their mind.

3. Choose your words wisely

When courting one’s intended, don’t underestimate the power of words.

Bumi Manusia tells the story of a Javanese man (Iqbaal Ramadhan) and a girl of mixed Dutch descent Annelies (Mawar Eva de Jongh) who fell in love in the midst of colonial upheaval in the 20th century.

In the film, Minke managed to conquer Annelies’ heart thanks to his entertaining words and sweet compliments.

Pro-tip: Communication is crucial in any relationship, and it’s especially important to express words of encouragement and compliments to your partner whenever possible. Be it a small matter such as their cooking skills or a big one like celebrating a job promotion, your encouraging words will definitely be appreciated and always remembered by your significant other.

4. Don’t hesitate to express your feelings

Couples in period dramas almost never spend much time in courtship. When two characters like each other, they immediately decide to get married.

Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Laurie (Timothée Chalamet), and Amy (Florence Pugh) from Little Women are the prime example of a legendary love triangle.

Although he harboured feelings for both sisters, Laurie ultimately proposed to and married Amy after she revealed that she had turned down another suitor’s proposal.

Pro-tip: Of course, one does not need to take such an extreme step like Laurie did, but the main takeaway is never to hesitate to express your feelings. If you like someone, say it and try not to waste your time on an uncertain prospect.
