AFTER a year of challenges, the performing arts industry has found innovative ways to digitise performances to keep the arts going. The outcome is online performances that reach audiences across geographical boundaries.

CloudTheatre is an award-winning online ticketed streaming platform for arts and culture shows. It made its debut in May last year to help the performing arts industry move forward.

To date, CloudTheatre hosted more than 70 online shows, sold over 15,000 tickets to audiences from over 40 countries. This month, there is a total of five online performances from England, Singapore, and Malaysia eagerly seeking your support.

'Unity' (1918) by The Actors Studio (Malaysia)

Produced by The Actors Studio, in conjunction with the anniversary of Malaysia’s movement control order (MCO), ‘Unity (1918)’ is running from now until March 28. Directed by Tung Jit Yang and co-directed by Dawn Cheong,

‘Unity (1918)’ by Kevin Kerr tells the story of small-town Unity in Canada, as the residents are forced to confront the 1918 flu pandemic that begins to sweep the planet, aided by the movement of troops at the tail-end of World War I. In KL last year, 11 actors and a small crew recorded the performance of this multi-award-winning play in the quiet theatre of the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in between two lockdowns amidst another global pandemic. They worked to tell a story that is relevant to the time, to raise funds for KLPac, to survive, and to create, despite the world seemingly crumbling to a halt.

‘Suri’ by Dian Dancers (Singapore)

The objectives of this production are to provide a platform for dancers to showcase talents in traditional, contemporary, and new creations, to sustain the appreciation of Malay performing art forms among local and international audiences. Show dates are on March 27 and 28. Based on the legendary Malay folklore, ‘Mahsuri’ tells the story of a woman vengefully accused of adultery due to her beauty and innocence and executed by stabbing. ‘Suri’ intends to explore the intrinsic qualities of the legendary character ‘Mahsuri, and to establish a robust link between the traditional values her story holds the present-day topics. Delving into the key motifs and elements in the Mahsuri story, ‘Suri’ – in highlighting issues of slander and shaming – interprets the significance of these aspects of today’s context.
