AMID the pandemic, some people tend to forget that Mother Nature still suffers from other afflictions. Unlike lovers and breakups, we are bound to only one of her in a lifetime. Without awareness and initiatives, either big or small, our fate might be sealed in just a few decades.

‘Simple Acts to Save Our Planet: 500 Ways to Make a Difference’ is not your common philosophical read. The 207-page book simply tells readers how they can live sustainably through fuss-free simple actions.

There’s not much to it, saving the planet does not mean that we have to go on a strike or maybe issue laws that are definitely out of our hands, it could simply start by changing your daily habits.

Here are the top takeaways from the pages of the book.

Thrift stores

Other than being sustainable, thrifting also yields the benefit of supporting small local businesses that need our help in times like these.

Not to mention, you’ll save a lot compared to the original price sold in retail stores. It’s not as bad as you think, you might be surprised by the things you could find in your local thrift stores, sometimes even rare items that cost more than what they are being sold for.

Tote bags

Given its reputation, tote bags are not just some accessories for hippies. Many stores nowadays are selling their versions of it since it helps a lot in reducing the number of one-time-use plastic bags that greatly harm the environment.

Ever saw the video of a turtle injured by a plastic straw? Well, that’s not the only hazard that harms marine lives, plastic bags are also one of the common things.

LED bulbs

Ever wished that your electrical bills are lower? There’s a trick for that, instead of using the common light bulbs, opt-out for an LED one. It’s both brighter and consumes way less energy than its predecessor. Lesser energy consumed equals lower bills. Simple equation and a simple change to help the environment.

Reusable bottles

If you are going for a run, bring your own bottle of water from home instead of buying a new one. This saves you an extra ringgit and helps reduce plastic wastes from polluting the environment.

Bonus tip: this also applies to coffee, bring your own cup whenever you’re getting your fix. Sometimes, stores would offer discounts to those who bring their bottle and containers.

High energy star appliances

Before buying any electrical appliances, try to find out the Energy Star ratings for them. These are the stickers that you see attached to the appliances in stores. It ranges from one star to five stars, five being the best while one being the worst. It helps the environment as well as your pockets as higher stars mean lower energy consumption.

See? That’s not so bad, isn’t it? These steps may seem simple yet the changes it brings lasts for a lifetime and it’s all practical in our day-to-day life – just a few tweaks here and there and you’re off to save the earth.

But why stop at five, when you could do 500? Check out ‘Simple Acts to Save Our Planet: 500 Ways to Make a Difference’ by Michelle Neff to find out more ways you could help Mother Nature! – The Vibes, April 15, 2021
