THE much-anticipated European Film Festival (EUFF) is returning to Malaysia. In partnership with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), Malaysian audiences can catch a slate of 17 films from 20 different countries.
Celebrating its 23rd year in Malaysia, EUFF shines the spotlight on contemporary award-winning European cinema. The featured films reflect Europe’s diversity, inclusivity, and solidarity.
This year’s festival is back with physical screenings. It will take place at selected GSC outlets in Kuala Lumpur from November 3 to 13 at venues like GSC Midvalley, GSC MyTown, GSC 1 Utama. The festival will be held in Penang from November 10 to 16 at GSC Gurney Plaza.
“Cinema helps to remind us of our humanity and just how our lives are intertwined with each other. We present this year’s EUFF in a tumultuous time.
"We open the festival with the multiple-award-winning Ukrainian film, Mother of Apostles, reaffirming our commitment to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
"This movie, like several others on our programme, celebrates universal values of peace, freedom, and human dignity,” said His Excellency Michalis Rokas, EU Ambassador to Malaysia.
The EUFF aims to display Europe’s rich cultural diversity with these critically acclaimed independent films, displaying the best of European cinema with award-winning actors, directors, and crew.
Mother of Apostles opens the film festival with a story that tells of immeasurable maternal love. For the sake of saving her child, a mother is capable of doing anything, even going through the hell of war.
Through her eyes, we see the horrors of war: the life of people living in the occupied territories, the faces distorted, and lives stopped by the war. The film is inspired by true events that took place in Eastern Ukraine in 2014.
The EUFF also features an inspirational family-friendly animated film, Even Mice Belong in Heaven explores the idea of an uncanny friendship between two animals, a mouse, and a fox.
It is a story that touches on familiar lessons in life and shares the values of selflessness, generosity and loyalty, messages that are relevant today. This film will bring fun and laughter for both kids and parents alike.
Doctor On Call is a comedy-drama about a 65-year-old doctor working as a night-shift medical guard and Mario, a pizza delivery rider, learning to support each other and change each other’s life for the better amid a series of misadventures.
Eight movies – Schoolgirls (Spain), Doctor on Call (Italy), My Brother Chases Dinosaurs (Italy), Goodwill Dumping (Netherlands), Disco (Norway), Catwalk (Sweden), The Stronghold (Ukraine) and Mother of Apostles (Ukraine) will be screened for free.
Cinemagoers can redeem the free tickets via e-payment on GSC’s website and application or the ticketing kiosks at the participating cinemas.
The 23rd EUFF is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, in collaboration with the embassies and cultural institutions of 15 EU Member States as well as Ukraine and Norway. Media partner Cinema Online is also supporting the film festival.
