US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait”, claiming the strategic waterway is now under US control despite continued Iranian attacks on vessels in the area.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday.
“Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”
The provocative proposal came as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate, with the United States carrying out fresh strikes near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran maintaining attacks against vessels in the area.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that US forces control the waterway, while Iran maintains that it has effectively closed the strategic chokepoint.
The White House later posted a map of the Gulf showing the waterway labelled “Trump Strait”, adding: “It’s got a nice ring to it.”
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most important energy-shipping routes, with roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it under normal conditions.
Trump’s proposal is the latest in a series of geographical renaming moves by the US president.
Last week, he ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America” amid a trade dispute with Canada, while he previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America”.
The latest proposal comes as the conflict with Iran enters its seventh month, despite Trump’s earlier prediction that the war would be short-lived. - September 3, 2026
