FOR his Bruce Lee biopic, Ang Lee has chosen to enlist a family member.

This won't be the first time son Mason Lee, 32, will be working in a feature film with his father. The Academy Award-winning director said the movie will focus on Bruce's identity and career, report E Online.

Titled ‘Bruce Lee’, the movie is in production with Dan Futterman attached as scriptwriter.

"Accepted as neither fully American nor Fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Gung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionised both the martial arts and action cinema," Ang said in a press release yesterday.

"I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality."

Bruce, who starred in Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon, is the acclaimed pop culture icon that popularised martial arts in the late 1960s to early 1970s.

This will be the third time Ang will direct his son, who as a toddler featured in his father's 1993 movie The Wedding Banquet. Mason has since acted in The Hangover Part II, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (directed by Ang) and Taiwanese rom-com Stand by Me.

On his father's opinion of his career, Mason said:

"He thought doing such a career is harsh, as film crew have to be away from [their] families for long stretches of time," he told South China Morning Post in 2021. "He didn't want his children to have such a life.

"But he eventually supported me. After seeing my films, he will be frank with me, praising the good performances and damning the bad ones. I look forward to working with him on set again." – The Vibes, December 1, 2022
