THE Sarawak Evangelical Christian Association has expressed support for the reintroduction of Bible Studies in government and private schools in Sarawak.
Association chairman Pastor Gremang Ujang today said the call by a Gabungan Parti Sarawak state assemblyman in the State Assembly sitting deserves full backing as it will be good for the future of Sarawakians.
"Bible Studies was brought to Sarawak by the Christian missionaries and the subject taught in our school for decades had shaped the Sarawak people who are united, harmonious and tolerant despite so many racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
"We in our association endorse the call to reintroduce Bible Studies as an official subject in Sarawak schools.
"We call on the state government to look into this as soon as possible," he said in a press statement.
GPS Bukit Semuja state assemblyman John Ilus, had proposed this in the State Assembly session, saying that Bible Studies was introduced into Sarawak by the Christian missionaries during the Brooke Rajahs rule.
"Bible Studies was officially a subject in our state education system during the Brooke era and then continued by the British colonial government.
"Bible Studies was taught to students of all races by the Christian missionaries and the subject was accepted wholeheartedly by students and their parents regardless of race and religion,” he said. - November 16, 2024
