UNIVERSITI Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has once again made history when 15 of its scientists were among the top two per cent of the World's Best Scientists 2025, a prestigious international recognition published by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier.

The achievement includes 14 scientists who were recognized in the Single Year Citation Impact category for 2024, while another six were listed in the Career-Long Citation Impact category.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Mansor, described the recognition as proof of the ability of a university from Borneo to stand alongside the world's best research institutions.

"We are very proud of this achievement. It proves that UMS scientists are able to stand alongside the world's best researchers, thus showing that knowledge and innovation from Borneo can contribute to solving global challenges," he said in a statement today.

He said the achievement was not just international recognition but also a catalyst for strengthening cooperation at various levels.

He explained that at the local level, the university will continue to collaborate with communities, government agencies and industries.

“At the regional level in Borneo, UMS aims to strengthen its network with academic partners in Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan.

“While on the global stage, the main focus is to build collaborations with international universities and organisations in the fields of research, academic mobility and innovation.

“This success is just the beginning. With expertise in various fields, UMS will continue to be a bridge of knowledge between Sabah, Borneo and the world,” added Datuk Dr. Kasim.

He also announced the names of the scientists who have made the university famous internationally

"Among the names listed in the Single Year Citation Impact category are Prof. Dr. Hanudin Amin, Dr. Teo Siow Hwa, Prof. Dr. Jason Teo Tze Wi, Prof. Ts. Dr. Zainul Amiruddin Zakaria, and Associate Prof. Dr. Christophe Patrice Andie Wiart.

"Also recognized are Prof. Dr. Md. Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee, Dr. Noora Barzkar, Associate Prof. Dr. Rovina Kobun, Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly, Prof. Dr. Md. Lutfor Rahman, Associate Prof. Dr. Shigeharu Sato, Prof. Dr. Uda Hashim, Prof. Dr. Rayner Alfred, and Dr. Nurul Elyani Mohamad.

"Meanwhile, in the Career-Long Citation Impact category, those listed include Prof. Ts. Dr. Zainul Amiruddin Zakaria, Associate Prof. Dr. Christophe Patrice Andie Wiart, Prof. Dr. Jason Teo Tze Wi, Prof. Dr. Md. Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee, Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly, and Prof. Dr. Md. Lutfor Rahman.

"The recognition of the 15 UMS scientists strengthens the university's reputation as a knowledge centre called the "Brain of Borneo", in line with the mission to elevate research and innovation from this region to the world stage," added Dr Kasim. - September 22, 2025.
