Of the 37 individual subjects ranked by QS World University Rankings, UM achieved 17 subjects ranked in the world top 100 this year, an increase in two subjects over last year’s performance.

Some 51% of the subjects considered had improved their positions, while 38% remained in the same rank.

In addition, UM’s best performance in terms of academic reputation was in Geography at 76.2%.

Meanwhile, Communication and Media Studies scored highest with 81.1% for employer reputation.

Its vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Mohd Hamdi Shukor said the higher citations per paper could indicate a greater amount of credibility and impact in the work of the researchers in Malaysia’s oldest university.

In order to ensure that UM’s research is positively relevant and impactful, not only to the academic community but also to the greater global community, Hamdi said the university has taken a number of initiatives in its performance management system.

He expressed hope for UM to develop and support five high impact special projects and an additional 15 special projects under category II this year. – The Vibes, April 6, 2022
