KUALA LUMPUR – Universiti Malaya (UM) is ranked top 150 in the 2023 edition of the QS World University rankings by subject.

Out of 1597 ranked institutions in all 5 broad subject areas, UM recorded placed 65th in Engineering & Technology, and 77th in Social Sciences & Management (77th), the university said in a statement today.

Vice-chancellor Datuk Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor said he was satisfied with the performance shown by UM considering the uncertainties introduced by changes in QS’ methodology and the inclusion of the International Research Network indicator for the first time in the ranking of individual subjects.

He expressed confidence that UM will improve over time through the consistent implementation of the Universiti Malaya Strategic Plan 2021-2025.

“Adherence to the five pillars of the Strategic Plan, i.e., Income Generation, Teaching & Learning, Research & Innovation, Talent, and Entrepreneurship will lead UM to be a self-sustaining and dynamic university which will enable us to continue producing leaders, imparting knowledge, and providing solutions that will impact the nation,” Hamdi said.

The vice-chancellor expressed his gratitude to the chancellor of UM, pro-chancellors, and board of directors for their strong support.  He also praised the Higher Education Ministry for making the achievement possible.

“I am pleased that the warga (community of) Universiti Malaya continue to place Malaysia on the global stage through our dedication, commitment, and hard work towards serving the nation and impacting the world.”

For Arts & Humanities, UM placed 109th, followed by Natural Sciences (150th) and Life Sciences & Medicine (148th).

With 32 subjects ranked 1st, UM leads all Malaysian universities ranked in QS-WUR 2023 by subject.

Of the 36 individual subjects ranked by QS, 15 UM subjects are ranked in the global Top 100 this year, a decrease of 2 subjects compared to last year’s performance. Of these, two of UM’s academic disciplines are ranked within the Top 50.

The subjects include Library and Information Science (27th), Theology, and Divinity & Religious Studies (43rd). Subjects that saw the most improvements are Chemistry (ranked 104th, up 33 places), Medicine (128th, up 16 places) and English Language & Literature (52nd, up 8 places).

Overall, the following thirteen academic disciplines are ranked within the Top 51 – 100: Electrical & Electronic Engineering (61), Education (67), English Language & Literature (52), Engineering – Chemical (65), Accounting & Finance (74), Modern Languages (79), Business & Management Studies (90), Computer Science & Information Systems (80), and Environmental Sciences (86).

In addition, Engineering – Civil & Structural, Geography, Development Studies, and Social Policy & Administration are placed in the 51 – 100 band.

Of the subjects considered, 14% improved their positions, 44% remained in the same rank, while 42% declined in the 2023 subject rankings.

In terms of the indicators used in the rankings, Engineering – Electrical & Electronic has the distinction of earning the highest scores among Malaysian universities for Citations per Paper (100%) and H-Index (94.0%).

In addition, UM’s best performance in terms of academic reputation was in Modern Languages (75.7%). Communication & Media Studies scored highest (78.8%) in UM for employer reputation.

UM’s highest scores in the newly introduced International Research Network indicator were achieved by Computer Science & Information Systems (88.9%), followed by Chemistry (88.6%). – The Vibes, March 22, 2023
