KUALA LUMPUR – Student-turned-activist Nurain Husniza Saiful Nizam is celebrating a stellar achievement after learning she scored 7 As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations today despite facing a barrage of criticisms.

“I cannot tell you how pressured I was during SPM,” Nurain, also popularly known as Ain Husniza, said on Twitter.

She recalled how people were telling her “there is no ‘berkat’ (blessing) in my studies” and how they had “continuously” wished for her failure in her studies.

Nurain, who caught national attention after exposing a male teacher for allegedly making rape jokes in school, said she had proven that her family’s prayers as well as her hard work had become a shield against such heinous words.

The proof, she noted, is when she achieved 7As and 1B in the SPM exams.

The examination papers that were shared on social media showed that Nurain, who moved to Cempaka Schools Cheras after the incident, had achieved A+ in English, history, communicative Malay literature, and visual arts education.

She also gained an A on Bahasa Malaysia, Islamic studies, and science, while she scored a B in mathematics.

Apart from a picture of the result slip, she also shared a screenshot of a comment from a certain individual who criticised her.

Nurain also said she often fell victim to verbal abuse and was humiliated on social media, with hundreds of netizens hoping she would fail the exams.

“They said I look like I abused drugs, they say I looked ‘high’, it is disgusting. It ‘demoralised’ my spirit,” she said.

“And after receiving my expulsion letter from the previous school, I thought, how about (my fate in) SPM (?)”

However, Nurain remained humble and noted that she was not an “excellent” student, but instead attributed her success to all the teachers and friends who have helped her along the way.

Her actions also spurred public conversation on making schools a safer environment, with #MakeSchoolASaferPlace trending on social media in the wake of the revelation.

However, her critics accused her of shaming her teacher and damaging the reputation of the school. She also claimed to have received threats from her classmates.

As a result, Nurain lodged a police report on the incidents.

However, Nurain had gained support from many high-profile individuals, including former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Zulkifli Mohamad Al Bakri, who praised her for her bravery and the impact she made on society. – The Vibes, June 16, 2022
