KUALA LUMPUR – The Education Ministry has requested all institutions under its purview to postpone activities outside the classroom in light of the current heat wave affecting the nation.
In a Facebook post, the ministry said the postponement applies to activities such as cross-country marathons, marches, sports and games, camping, as well as outdoor teaching and learning.
“Considering the prolonged hot and dry weather that is hitting the country, educational institutions under the Education Ministry are asked to postpone all outdoor activities involving students, teachers, and lecturers,” it was quoted as saying by The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister portal, Getaran.
Previously, the ministry decided to allow school closures if the hot spell reached a heat wave status and a second warning level, where the temperature rises above 37°C for three consecutive days.
This move was made through the closure of educational institutions under the education ministry during hot weather guidelines, which was signed by Education Deputy Director-General (School Operations Sector) Norisah Suhaili.
The directive took effect immediately after its issuance on April 28.
Besides preschools, primary, and secondary schools, the guideline applies to all institutions under the ministry.
This includes vocational colleges, Form 6 colleges, matriculations, teacher education institutes, and private institutions registered under the ministry.
The ministry recently announced that teachers, students, and administrators are permitted to use sports attire in schools amid the hot spell.
The announcement was made to ensure their welfare and avoid health complications such as hyperthermia, heatstroke, and dehydration.
Yesterday, Education Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying also urged school authorities to take precautionary measures and cease outdoor activities, although no schools in the country have yet to be closed. – The Vibes, May 4, 2023
