KUALA LUMPUR – Despite the country logging the highest daily Covid-19 cases on New Year’s eve, Malaysians were keen to usher in 2021 with gusto.
The 2,525 new cases announced yesterday did not deter the crowd as they thronged popular attractions here with family and friends without adhering to basic health SOPs.
While heavy traffic was reported in the Bukit Bintang area, it was markedly different in Dataran Merdeka, which was closed to the public.
Heavy traffic was also seen on roads leaving the city as they headed to their hometowns, taking advantage of the long weekend break.
Police spent their New Year’s eve issuing warnings to the public, dispersing crowds and even arresting violators.
Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had on Wednesday warned against public celebrations and gatherings on New Year's eve.
