KUALA LUMPUR – It was a jubilant Thursday evening as Malaysia finally got its prime minister when Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in at Istana Negara.
His supporters gathered in droves outside his residence in Sg Long, Kajang and office in Petaling Jaya waiting to get a glimpse of the man who waited 24 years for a chance to lead the country.
Anwar led PH into this year’s general election buoyed by what he described as euphoric support from the public akin to the Reformasi rallies in 1998.
While PH fell markedly short of winning the required 112 parliamentary seats to form the government, it secured a total 82 constituencies, making it the single largest coalition in Parliament.
Five days after polling day, Anwar secured a unity government when Barisan Nasional (BN) and other parties issued support for him as prime minister.
Now, all eyes will be fixed on how his government will address the rising cost of living, particularly after how his coalition had hounded the previous Perikatan Nasional and BN administrations over the issue.
