COMEDIAN Ronny Chieng, who has made a name for himself in the US, has expressed elation at being made a guest host on The Daily Show, a highly popular interview and satire programme that has been running for years.

Chieng, who was born and grew up in Johor Bahru and now resides in the US, shared his happiness in a post on his Facebook account yesterday.

He also expressed gratitude for being entrusted to host the show, which aired on November 21, calling it a dream of his since a long time ago.

His main guest to banter with was another comedian, John Oliver.

“What a dream to host @thedailyshow! Thank you for believing in me,” Chieng said in his post.

“Everything good that has happened to me in America is because of this show. And thanks to John Oliver for all the advice over the years and for being the best guest interview I could ask for.”

Congratulatory messages poured in from fans and followers on social media. Many expressed how much they enjoyed Chieng’s brand of humour and handling of interviews in the show.

“Thank you for representing the people of Malaysia. It was fun watching the show, we love your jokes,” one internet user said.

Chieng, whose full name is Ronny Chieng Xin Yi, grew up in Johor Bahru and attended school in Singapore before continuing his studies in Australia.

The law graduate from the University of Melbourne started his career as a comedian while in Australia.

He has starred in the Marvel film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and in the sitcom series “Ronny Chieng: International Student” for the Australia Broadcasting Corporation and Comedy Central Asia in 2017.

During the show, Chieng poked fun at himself, igniting laughter from the studio audience.

“I am Ronny Chieng, and I am guest hosting for one day only. Dreams do come true.

“I just want to thank the network for believing in me – for 23 minutes only,” he said in jest. – The Vibes, November 24, 2023.
