DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang has stressed that the promise of institutional reforms is not something that would happen overnight.
The people need to buy into patience, as the country would not adopt the "French Revolution" style of subjecting those who disagree to the guillotine, said Lim
"Instead, we need time to convince people to buy into the reforms. We cannot be hasty but believe me over time, the reforms would come as it is good for the country."
The decades of struggle in trying to make a better Malaysia shall continue, and this includes the reforms, Lim said.
Speaking at a birthday tribute to him by the Penang DAP, Lim recalled that as early as 1973, he was already advocating a minimum wage for workers, as DAP rose from the working class in the country.
He also recalled how he fought when extremists wanted to ban the Chinese cultural lion and dragon dances from being showcased in the country.
Today the cultural performance of such troupes have become identical to various Chinese functions and events, he added.
Lim also said that life is constantly full of challenges.
The 83-year-old spoke of how the world must now cope with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), climate change and trade wars besides the rise of new diseases.
To address this, Lim said the government needs to be proactive and the people need to support what is good for the country. - February 16, 2025.
