EMERGING talent in Malaysia’s arts scene is being given a unique opportunity to develop professionally through the ILTIZAM Seni programme, which combines mentorship, training, and practical exposure to help young artists establish careers in the local creative industry.
According to Hizwani Hassan, Director of Stakeholder Affairs at Ekuinas, the six-month initiative is specifically designed to empower young artists, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. Each participant receives a stipend, accommodation, and basic necessities, enabling them to dedicate themselves fully to their craft.
“Usually, fine arts graduates have no income after completing their studies. So, we provide a stipend, accommodation, and meals so that they can focus on creating artwork. Within four months, they will produce new works which will later be exhibited and made available for sale,” she explained.
In the current cycle, four participants are placed in the Karak residency, gaining knowledge in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, branding, and benefiting from mentor-mentee sessions with established artists.
Participant Mairul Malek described the programme as invaluable in providing guidance on managing both their artworks and their careers.
“For example, when given the opportunity to participate in exhibitions, transactions inevitably occur. With modules on art marketing and financial management, it becomes much easier to manage finances, including studio expenses, capital, and dealings with galleries,” he said.
Similarly, participant Aliff Danial emphasised the importance of mentorship in understanding the intricacies of painting and sustaining a career in the arts.
“Our mentor teaches us how to manage our work and survive in an art career. It’s not just about painting, but about managing every aspect of being an artist,” he said.
Khairanee Iro, another participant, highlighted the value of interacting with fellow artists during the residency. “The experience in the residency is very meaningful. I get to learn from experienced artists, receive encouragement and support, which helps me grow in this industry,” she said.
Khairanee added that, in addition to artistic skills, participants are trained in managing art sales and communication with galleries, preparing them to navigate the arts sector holistically.
“Through this programme, I have learned a great deal about producing artwork and communicating with galleries and other professionals. It helps me become a more well-rounded artist,” she explained.
The artworks produced during the programme will be showcased in an exhibition scheduled for April 2026, with organisers aiming for higher sales than the previous cycles, which recorded total sales of RM179,490.
ILTIZAM Seni is expected to serve as a springboard for young artists, offering them a pathway to sustainable income and professional growth within Malaysia’s visual arts sector. - February 1, 2026
