THE bustling streets of Bangi Sentral experienced significant congestion today as thousands of shoppers capitalised on the festive long weekend to begin their preparations for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Despite the current focus on Lunar New Year festivities, the retail district has seen a surge in demand for traditional Malay attire, with some boutiques reporting lengthy queues as customers seek to avoid the eventual rush of the Ramadan season.
Among those navigating the crowds was Syahira Nizam, a twenty-nine-year-old housewife who undertook a four-hour journey from Johor Bahru specifically to access the concentrated variety of fashion outlets in the area.
Accompanied by her husband, she arrived in the mid-morning to secure her festive wardrobe before the onset of the fasting month.
Discussing her decision to shop nearly two months in advance, Syahira Nizam explained, “I and my husband departed from home at 6.30am and arrived here at Bangi Sentral at approximately 11am today.
“We chose to come here today because of the two-day public holiday. This is the first time I have shopped for Raya items here after seeing many clothing boutiques available in Bangi Sentral.
The preference for early procurement appears to be a strategic move for many families wishing to maintain their religious focus during the holy month of Ramadan without the physical strain of last-minute retail errands.
Syahira Nizam added: “I like to buy Raya items earlier, specifically before Ramadan, because I do not want to feel tired while fasting, in addition to avoiding the congestion.
“If seen today it is also congested with people, but at least it is not during the fasting time to face that congestion.”
The logistical convenience of the hub has also drawn regular patrons from neighbouring townships, who view the area as a one-stop destination for price and design comparisons.
Nurul Munirah Abdul Rahman, a thirty-four-year-old private sector employee from nearby Kajang, described the location as an essential annual stop for her family.
Reflecting on the accessibility of the district, Nurul Munirah Abdul Rahman noted, Bangi Sentral is close to my home in Kajang.
“So, every year I definitely visit here to buy clothes for Raya. There are many clothing boutiques here, which at the same time makes it easier for the public to shop while comparing prices and preferred designs.”
The heavy turnout resulted in sluggish traffic flow throughout the commercial precinct, with local enforcement and security personnel observing a steady stream of vehicles since the early morning hours.
