A WOMAN’S long-held childhood memory has taken on a deeper, more emotional meaning years later — after she discovered that the kindness she once believed was arranged by her late mother was, in fact, an act of quiet generosity.
In an anonymous confession, she recounted growing up in a single-parent household, largely under the care of her grandmother while her mother worked to make ends meet.
That fragile stability was shattered when her mother passed away from an illness when she was just 10.
Left with no steady income, her grandmother — already retired — returned to work to support her. Even then, money was tight.
Meals were often reduced to the cheapest option available: instant noodles.
It was during this period that a small moment changed her daily life.
One afternoon after school, she wandered into a nearby food court, drawn by the smell of cooked food.
With only RM2 in her pocket, she knew she couldn’t afford a proper meal and turned to leave — until a mixed rice stall owner called her back.
He told her something that would stay with her for years: that her mother had left money with him before she passed away, and she could eat there with the cost deducted from that amount.
Hungry and unsure, she accepted.
When she tried to pay after finishing, the hawker waved her off.
On some days, she even packed food home for her grandmother — again, without charge.
What began as a one-off meal became a routine.

For nearly two years, the stall became her safety net. Whenever she worried that the “money” might run out, the man reassured her that there was still enough.
Eventually, she moved away in 2014 to live with her biological father.
Despite the promise of better financial support, she admitted it was difficult leaving behind the grandmother who had raised her.
Years later, at 18, she returned to the neighbourhood, hoping to revisit a place that had once meant so much to her.
But the man was no longer there.
Instead, she was met by his wife, who told her he had passed away about a year after she left. In that conversation, the truth finally surfaced.
There had never been any money left behind.
The hawker had simply noticed her lingering at the stall that day, overheard conversations about her family situation, and decided he couldn’t let a child go hungry.
So he made up a story — one that preserved her dignity while ensuring she was fed - for two years.
The woman ended her story with gratitude — not just for the meals, but for the heartfelt care behind them. – May 18, 2026
