PAWS Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a non-profit animal shelter in Petaling Jaya that has been in operation since 1987. They receive the surrender of unwanted dogs and cats which they vaccinate, deworm, medicate, neuter/spay, and put up for adoption.
Currently, there are over 250 dogs and 250 cats under their care. The shelter and all costs involved in running it are entirely funded by the generous donations of the public as well as proceeds from charitable events.
The plot of land along the old Subang airport road on which their facility was located for 34 years has been gazetted as road reserve land by the government. The Land Office gave PAWS 2 months to relocate.
With the Land Office being relentless in insisting that PAWS shift, and contractors not willing to commit to a work schedule due to the MCO, PAWS was forced to shift to the new empty piece of land in April of last year when the Land Office began demolishing their cattery. They are now housed in a ramshackle collection of sheds
The government did generously give the shelter an alternative plot in Ara Damansara, but it is an empty piece of land divided by a road reserve. This is where PAWS’ new facility is going to be built.
For the new shelter, the main building will be built on the bigger plot while the smaller plot will be used as a quarantine station as well as a pound to serve the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA). The old shelter was too small to accommodate all the animals that were either picked up as strays by the city councils or surrendered by members of the public.
One of their initiatives to raise funds is the PAWS Inaugural Charity Golf 2022, at the Palm Garden Golf Club in Putrajaya to be held on Wednesday June 1st. The fee for an individual player is RM1,000 and RM4,000 for a flight of 4 players.
All donations to PAWS are tax-deductible under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967.
Besides enjoying a good game of golf, highlights of the event include lunch, cocktails, a talk show, live band, dinner, charity auction, lucky draws and a closing party.
