FASHION is one of the most versatile forms of art there is.

Ask any designer and they would agree on the power behind realising the different fabrication of styles through clothing.

Providing us with a visible understanding of this is celebrated Malaysian fashion designer Datuk Seri Bernard Chandran in the ‘Petang Raya’ exhibition taking place at Fahrenheit 88, in Kuala Lumpur.

Having launched the first capsule edition, under the same title, back in 2006, he invites fashion enthusiasts to discover his creations through a more personalised journey. The exhibition takes a look at how he has championed the Lebaran styles over the years.

From intricate embroideries, sequins and crystal embellishments to denim, unorthodox pattern pairings, shiny taffeta, tassels and more, it’s clear that the designer dares to experiment.

Having all his designs displayed for the show, with themed curations set out so that visitors can understand his everchanging creative motivations is refreshing for the local scene.

“Back when I was still in fashion school, most of my time was not just spent in the workroom.

“We [the class] were brought to museums to research fabrics from the 1400s up to the 1900s, and I remembered how they were all beautifully archived.

“That makes for a great learning experience,” said Chandran, with hopes that his guests are similarly able to take away from the exhibition.

“I genuinely keep my designs safely without even knowing what would happen. And in all honesty, it is not necessarily about me having to house my collection in a museum-like way.

It is said that this particular finale piece is inspired by politician and member of Parliament Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. While he did not intend for the clothing to be politically inclined, Chandran notes that his choice for her as an independent muse for the design came during a time when women’s vigour and spirit were at their highest in the country. “I think being a designer is not just about making and selling clothes. Part of our responsibility is to educate – and share with others – what I see, learn and love,” he added.

“We have a lot of our fit over the years being done, and I do shows consistently so people can find relatability to the changing fashion and style inspirations.

“While the idea of ‘Petang Raya’ is not necessarily new, this is the third exhibition carried of its kind. I am quite grateful to be given the opportunity to showcase my works in ways such as this,” noted the highly-spirited fashion designer.
