WHEN you carry the title of King, an ordinary luxury car simply isn’t enough. For Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, making an entrance means driving something truly extraordinary—often one of the rarest coach-built machines ever created.
A viral post from the Instagram page carbuddiemy recently showed the King behind the wheel of what many are calling the world’s most expensive car.
The model in question is the stunning two-door Rolls-Royce Droptail, finished in an elegant green with gold accents along the grille. This ultra-exclusive creation is believed to cost over RM100 million, or more than USD $30 million.
He was seen arriving in this one-of-a-kind car at a Hari Raya open house held at the Johor Palace—a long-standing tradition during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, where hosts welcome guests to celebrate the end of Ramadan.
While social media often exaggerates, the claim that the Droptail is among the most expensive new cars in the world is actually very close to reality.
Only four Droptails will ever be built, each one uniquely designed for its owner.
So far, three versions have been revealed:
• La Rose Noire Droptail – reportedly commissioned by a wealthy European collector with ties to France
• Amethyst Droptail – created for a private client, inspired by the owner’s family
• Arcadia Droptail – delivered to a mystery billionaire, widely believed to be based in Singapore
The fourth and final Droptail has not been officially confirmed, but many believe the King’s car could be that last undisclosed unit.
Crowned as Malaysia’s 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in January 2024, Sultan Ibrahim is well known for his deep passion for automobiles.
His private collection—kept within his royal residences—is considered one of the most impressive in the world, featuring everything from rare Ferraris and bespoke Rolls-Royces to classic American muscle cars and even a custom-built Mack truck.
Unlike many heads of state, he is often seen driving his own vehicles rather than being chauffeured. Because of this, sightings of him taking out multi-million-dollar cars—especially during festive occasions—frequently spread across social media.
Inside the Royal Garage
As remarkable as the Droptail is, it represents just a fraction of the collection. The royal fleet is believed to include around 500 vehicles, including some of the rarest hypercars ever built:
• McLaren F1 (1995): A legendary supercar with a central driving seat, gold-lined engine bay, and a top speed of 240 mph.
• McLaren F1 LM: One of only five ever produced, built to celebrate McLaren’s 1995 Le Mans victory and stripped of non-essential features.
• McLaren P1: A hybrid hypercar capable of reaching 217 mph, with bespoke gold detailing by McLaren Special Operations.
• McLaren Speedtail: A futuristic three-seat model with a teardrop design and a top speed of 250 mph.
• McLaren Elva: The lightest McLaren road car, built without a windshield and equipped with an advanced air management system to redirect airflow.
