THIS all-new seventh generation Hyundai Elantra was launched in March this year in West Hollywood, North America, with a special event that was broadcast around the world due to Covid-19.

It was a world debut of the latest Hyundai sedan which has seen sales success in America and most of Asia. It is only Malaysian car buyers that lack any interest in owning a Korean vehicle despite its high safety features and cabin refinement. Badge branding is the issue and this will continue for years.

Connectivity

This 2021 Elantra showcases Hyundai's latest ambitions, including a Sensuous Sportiness design identity and segment-first wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

The car also provides exciting driving dynamics and the most progressive in-car experience in its class. Production of the 2021 Hyundai Elantra started in the fall of 2020 in Ulsan, Korea and global sales started in Q4 2020.

Malaysia is one of the very first markets to get this latest Elantra and its possible selling price will be high in comparison to its Japanese rivals, but reasonable in comparison to its European rivals. Yes, in mature car markets, Hyundai is pitted directly against European brands. We estimate its selling price to be between RM158,888 to RM165,888.

Design

To transform the 2021 Hyundai Elantra into its new four-door fastback look, Hyundai engineers and designers had to make it longer, lower and wider compared to the sixth-generation model.

Dimensions

The 2021 Elantra gains 2.2 inches in overall length and 0.8 inch in its wheelbase, and the overall width is increased by one inch. The overall height also dropped 0.8 inch, and the front cowl point was moved back almost two inches. These minor changes dramatically changed the shape of the car but had limited impact on cabin space. In fact, most key interior dimensions have increased.

Powertrain

For the Malaysian buyer this all-new Elantra comes fully imported and with just one engine option, the SmartStream G1.6 MPi petrol engine that delivers 123PS of power at 6,300rpm and a peak torque of 154Nm at 4,500rpm.

This Elantra comes with an 8-speed Smartstream IVT which offers a 4.2% improvement in fuel economy and a reduction of 5% to 8% in engine power loss. Although it is very similar to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), IVT is said to be capable of reproducing the shift pattern of a manual transmission, making it feel more responsive.
