MANY food delivery riders do not have it easy as they struggle to make ends meet for themselves and their families.

They must endure severe weather conditions, watch their own safety on the road, and rush to ensure they deliver the food on time.

A recent incident has shown how these workers have to face not only inconvenience and pressure, but also abuse.

Netizens are upset and angry over the unbecoming attitude of a customer who referred to a delivery rider as “Weh Babi”.

Apparently, the customer placed an order close to 2am and it took some time to arrive.

The rider, who related his experience on Facebook, said he had just collected the order when he received a message from the customer.

The message read, “Weh babi, cepat sikit, aku dah order bapak lama” (hurry up, I placed my order a while back already).

The customer also said he had to work in the morning and did not expect to wait close to an hour for his food.

The rider politely replied that he had just received the order.

In his Facebook post, the rider explained that late-night orders were likely delayed because there were not many riders online.

“Also ordering food online is different from booking an e-hailing ride. In e-hailing, the order goes directly to the driver’s app and he leaves immediately to pick up the customer.

“As for food orders online, it goes into the vendor’s app and he prepares the food and at the same time, looks for a rider.

“That is why the rider is always blamed when the food is delayed and he is scolded for no reason,” he said.

Among others, netizens said the rider should have just cancelled the order of the rude customer, while others took the customer to task for his poor behaviour. – The Vibes, November 22, 2023
