PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has called on the party to conduct a post-mortem of the recent elections so it could emerge stronger in the future.
Saying that success must not breed complacency, the former Permatang Pauh MP said there was a lot that PKR could learn from the past.
It is believed that Nurul Izzah was referring to the polls in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Penang, Kelantan and Terengganu last August as well as several by-elections since the 15th general election in November last year.
“Our past is an indication of our future. So, let’s learn from the past so that we can have a better future,” she said in her speech at the PKR congress yesterday.
She added that empathy was a key component in the current administration and would help the party stay in power and stay relevant. The challenge was to translate empathy into policy that positively transforms the lives of the people.
“Parti Keadilan Rakyat has to continue building on its success and efforts in providing a more holistic social protection especially on policies that empower women and assists them in returning to the workforce,” Nurul Izzah said.
Towards this end, she reminded delegates that the unity government had introduced the i-Suri scheme which allows housewives, widows and single mothers to contribute to the Employees Provident Fund.
Mothers returning to work are also eligible to enjoy subsidies on their first month’s salaries.
“We are not stopping at that. We also want to follow in the footsteps of Selangor and Penang in providing childcare facilities at the workplace to encourage mothers to return to work,” said Nurul Izzah, who is also co-head of the secretariat for the Advisory Committee to the Finance Minister.
These initiatives as well as the socioeconomic policies anchored on the Madani values launched by the unity government were in sharp contrast with the politics of hatred and extremism based on petty issues stirred up by the opposition, she added.
As a result, the Madani administration was able to maintain political stability and draw greater investments.
Nurul Izzah also reminded delegates of the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza, who had been oppressed over the past 75 years, and called on Malaysians to continue supporting the victims there. – The Vibes, November 27, 2023
