BERSATU’S youth wing has refuted a claim from the party’s own supreme council member that 10 MPs from the ruling unity government would switch their support to opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) to form a new government.

Its chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who is also the Machang MP, stressed that what was aired by supreme councillor Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof was nothing more than hearsay with no basis at all.

He said the claim came from a party leader who is not a member of parliament.

“Of course, he (Mohd Redzuan) only heard the news from who knows where,” Wan Ahmad Fayhsal was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

“I strongly refute this. I refute the speculation which has no basis at all.”

He noted that five Bersatu MPs had recently proclaimed support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to lead the country. He thus questioned how it could be possible for PN and Bersatu as its component to replace the unity government led by Anwar at this stage, or even manage to attract 10 Umno MPs from the government’s side.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal was commenting on Mohd Redzuan’s claim today that over 10 government lawmakers, including from PKR which Anwar heads, would switch their support to PN to form a new government.

He added that Bersatu MPs were committed to being opposition representatives. He stressed that they were also aware of Anwar’s latest position in having gained two-thirds support in the House.

“So, at our level as Bersatu MPs, we are committed to being the opposition in parliament. That is our responsibility at the moment.

“He (Mohd Redzuan) is not an MP. He is only responding to things that may happen to Bersatu MPs.

“Right now, Anwar has a two-thirds majority, so how do (government MPs) want to run (switch support) and so on?” he asked.

Mohd Redzuan had reportedly also claimed that “internal negotiations” are ongoing among PN’s leadership on the matter.

Meanwhile, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the unity government spokesman, urged opposition politicians to stop issuing statements that would confuse the public.

He said the latest statement by Mohd Redzuan was not surprising.

“If we see from the beginning, every month there is a new story and to me, this is something that will always be said, maybe by the opposition, because there are among those who mention it within the parties, and they are now in panic mode.”

“For me, the politician and friends in Bersatu need not mention such things because the basic issue if we listen to Pakatan Harapan MPs is the refusal of the opposition leader to sit down to discuss this with the deputy prime minister for us to reach an agreement,” he said. – The Vibes, December 2, 2023.
