AN economy rice seller in his sixties was stabbed 27 times in a car park of an apartment block in Taman Continental, Jelutong, George Town, last night.

The victim, identified as Teh Teik Chye, was stabbed in his chest and neck with a knife and died in the emergency ward of the Penang Hospital.

Acting northeast district police head V. Saravanan, who confirmed the incident, said police received a distress call around 6.30pm about the victim lying in the car park of the apartment block.

“Initial investigations revealed that the deceased was earlier involved in a quarrel with two motorcyclists. A CCTV recording showed that one suspect was on the motorcycle while the other confronted the victim. A scuffle ensued and the victim was stabbed 27 times by the suspect,” said Saravanan.

The killer then fled the scene with his accomplice.

Police are trying to establish a motive and have ruled out robbery since the victim’s belongings were left intact.

The victim also has a police record, Saravanan confirmed.

Teh sold economy rice at the Perak Road main market, and he resided with his family, including his children and grandchildren, in one of the apartments.

Saravanan said police will investigate the case for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Just two days earlier, an infant was found dead at the beachfront near Queensbay Mall.

Southwest district police head Kamarul Rizal Jenal revealed that the baby girl had sharp stab wounds to her neck, describing it as a merciless act.

“The post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was sharp incisions to the neck.”

The case has also been classified as murder.

Initial investigations found that the infant’s naked and intact body could have been swept away from elsewhere.
