THE state government has advised Penang folk to take extra precautions to ensure their wellbeing following the resurgence of Covid-19 cases.

State executive councillor for health, Daniel Gooi said the public is encouraged to increase their personal surveillance on preventive steps against Covid-19 based on Health Ministry (MOH) recommendations.

Based on data from MOH’s website, Penang recorded 18 new Covid-19 cases as of December 2, with 518 active cases and 90% listed under home quarantine.

Five patients are hospitalised, with one under ventilation.

Gooi urged residents and visitors alike to observe five key points in the latest battle to contain the highly transmissible virus.

He advised folks to practise hand hygiene and self-sanitisation and those infected to use masks when in confined situations. Gooi said high-risk groups such as senior citizens, those suffering from chronic illnesses, those with low immunity and pregnant women must also wear masks.

They must also adopt the Test, Report, Isolate, Inform and Seek Help initiative if they develop symptoms.

Those yet to receive their booster shots, should do so, said Gooi.

According to Gooi, the resurgence of Covid-19 isn't exclusive to Penang but a global trend.

Gooi said at this juncture 90% of the cases are mild, but to prevent cluster infection, he has directed health authorities to monitor old folks homes, immigration depots and areas where crowding occurs.

Neighbouring Singapore has also reported a spike in new cases but as Covid is now defined as endemic, people must simply learn how to live with it. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung assured vaccines remained effective against the new strains.

Penang Malaysian Medical Association honorary secretary Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh urged the public to take precautions against all forms of virus infections by masking where necessary and to build on their immunity levels. – The Vibes, December 6, 2023
