THE FLOODING situation in Johor has worsened with about 8,400 people having been evacuated to temporary relief centres by last night.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is the National Disaster Committee chairman, said that a total six Johor districts were affected by the floods occurring since last week while in Pahang three districts were hard-hit.
The number of flood evacuees at 73 relief centres in Johor and Pahang dropped to 8,397 at 8pm yesterday from 8,462 (74 relief centres) at noon.
“The flooding situation in Johor has worsened. Six districts have been affected and temporary relief centres have been opened, housing some 1,868 families.
“In Pahang, three districts were affected. A total of 23 centres are opened and are housing 276 families or 896 victims.
“In Sarawak, one district is affected with one centre opened, housing 12 families with 38 victims,” he told reporters in Kota Belud, Sabah yesterday evening.
Zahid said several disaster relief efforts are being undertaken and coordination meetings have been held to mobilise assistance through the cooperation of various agencies, including the involvement of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), the army, police, and Fire and Rescue Department.
Earlier, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan announced that some RM10 million is needed for repair infrastructure damaged by the flash floods in Johor.
Bernama reported late last night that the number of flood evacuees at 73 relief centres in Johor and Pahang had dropped to 8,397 at 8pm yesterday.
According to a report on the latest flood situation issued by the National Disaster Command Centre of Nadma, there were 7,947 evacuees at 52 relief centres in Johor last evening compared to 7,297 at 50 centres this afternoon.
It said 4,705 evacuees were being accommodated at 26 relief centres in Kota Tinngi, 11 centres in Johor Bahru (1,753 evacuees), nine centres in Kluang (1,306), four centres in Segamat (75), and one centre each in Kulai (86) and Pontian (22).
In Pahang, the number of evacuees taking shelter at 21 relief centres in three districts dropped to 450 compared to 1,165 at 24 centres in the afternoon.
In Rompin, 69 evacuees were being housed at 11 relief centres, 377 at nine centres in Pekan, and four at one centre in Maran.
Meanwhile, observations at the Drainage and Irrigation Department Telemetry Station showed that several rivers are at danger levels, including Sungai Skudai in Johor Bahru; Sungai Johor in Johor Bahru, Kota Tinggi and Kulai, as well as Sungai Endau in Kluang.
Others affected are Sungai Kuantan (Kuantan); Sungai Pahang (Pekan), Sungai Rompin (Rompin); Sungai Pahang in Jerantut and Maran; Sungai Kelantan (Kota Bharu); Sungai Perak (Hulu Perak); Sungai Arau (Arau); and Batang Sadong (Kuching).
The report also said 48 roads were closed due to floods, damaged or collapsed bridges and landslides.
The affected roads included Jalan Pekan-Batu Balik di Pekan, Pahang; Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang in Kota Tinggi, Johor; Jalan Sungai Sam to Dabong in Jeli, Kelantan; Jalan Bukit Jugra in Kuala Langat, Selangor and Trolak Selatan in Batang Padang, Perak. – The Vibes, January 10, 2024
